Running is one of the most popular forms of exercise in the UK , with the percentage of regular runners standing at 14%, according to Statista. To some it may be a hobby, or simply an active sport to participate in, however this favoured sport may have more health benefits than you know.

Mental Health benefits

The Manual have shared, from their research, that running has mental health benefits such as "relieving stress" and "mood improvement". This is supported by scientific evidence that shows that running and jogging increase the blood flow to the brain and release natural mood elevating compounds. Could this explain why many people start their day by going on morning runs? This can benefit those, especially, who have high demanding careers.

Physical benefits

The physical benefits of running are quite known. This form of exercise helps build muscular strength which increases endurance, but also aids with the vascular health.

Running increases bone density by placing stress on the bones which stimulates them to adapt by laying down more minerals within the bony matrix to strengthen the structure. Lastly, studies conducted by Live Science have shown running is a great way of lowering blood pressure and resting your heart rate, as well as improving blood sugar control and lowering cholesterol.
